Using Color in Magick
Colours can be used in Magic to increase or define the power of a spell, or to symbolize specific material things or concepts. Colour can be brought into your workings in the form of a particular robe that you wear for certain types of magic, altar cloths, candles, flowers or inks; or you can use pure visualization to bring them into your consciousness before, during, or immediately following a rite, as appropriate.
One thing to keep in mind about the magical attributions of color is that they, like so much in the study of the Craft, are very subjective. In the course of my personal studies, I have come across no less than five color combinations that can be used to represent the Lord and Lady on a magical altar; and at least the same number of combinations have been recommended for representation of the elements at the cardinal points.
If you are a newcomer to the Arts, do not let this type of apparent inconsistency be a great source of confusion. When you find something that seems to contradict what you have read before, keep reading! Often, the author will explain why she does thing in her own certain way.
When studying the Arts, it will be the reasons why that you need most to consider. Successful magic is not woven by blind and rote repetition of dusty, old spells written by some famous Witch or Mystic from long ago but by carefully-considered actions that are based on your own subjective inner-symbolism and reason. The attributions that you use in your magic, color, elemental, and others must ring true to you, first and foremost. Follow your instinct, and success will find you!
