Sigils and Talismans
A sigil is simply a sign or image that has magickal properties. The purpose of a sigil is to direct your subconscious mind to accomplish the desires or needs of your conscious mind. Your subconscious mind requires symbolism created by the conscious mind to motivate it to accomplish your desires. A sigil is the image, the symbol, that has meaning to your conscious mind- and can be sent to your subconscious to "will" it to achieve your desire.
There are many different theories on sigils and their uses, many different ways to create them, and here I will tell you how I use them, and when I use them.
Many magickal practitioners feel that you should create your own sigils in your magickal rites. A sigil created by anyone other than you will not have the same powers or be as effective for you as a sigil you make yourself, in my opinion.
Drawing sigils isn't as simple as grabbing a piece of paper and making a design. A sigil should be drawn when you are in a meditative state or are focusing on your intended goal. Sigils have powers beyond understanding, and I believe they can be a wonderful extension of your magick. I also want you to be careful when using them. As in all other spells- "Be careful what you wish for." Make sure you truly want and need what you are attempting to achieve.
The pentacle is the most powerful sigil used in Neo-pagan witchcraft and by many occultists. Other sigils serve as identifying logos of organizations. Individuals can adopt their personal sigils by selecting a letter from the rune or Theban alphabets. They have personal, secret meaning and are often inscribed on magical tools used in occult practices and ceremonies. Sigils also serve as amulets, talismans, or meditation tools.
In general terms, a sigil is any glyph or symbol with mystical or magical significance.
- Making your Sigil:
There are three main parts to the construction of a sigil: formulation of a sentence of your desire into a graphic representation, and implantation of the graphic into the sub consciousness. The Sentence must be concise, using just enough words to express the meaning and no more.
Producing your Sigil:
The sentence is then written out on paper in all capital letters, usually near the top of a large piece of paper -- the lower part will be used during the construction of the sigil.
- Graphic Sigils
Out of these letter-shapes, a combined image is formed. The letters can be linked to each other, or superimposed on top of each other, in any manner desired.
- Charging Your Sigil
In the old traditions of talismanic magick, once an amulet was created by whatever means, it had to be endowed with "energy" by some action of the magician. Sigil Magic is a completely different approach. Making a sigil work is, in a way, the opposite of "charging". The idea is to open the gates of the deep mind and cause the sigil to be "absorbed" into it. The magician doesn't charge the sigil, the sigil charges the magician!
- Losing the Meaning
It's said; a sigil whose meaning is consciously remembered at the point it is charged is a sigil that won't work. So you MUST find a way to consciously "forget" the meaning behind a sigil to make it work.
There are practicing Chaos Magicians who would dispute this, and claim that as long as you have the sigil where it can be perceived, either in sight or strongly imagined, it doesn't matter what the conscious mind is doing as long as gnosis is reached.
One way of deliberate forgetting is to create a few sigils for different purposes, put them away out of sight for a couple weeks or so until you can't remember which one was which, then charge them either all at once or one after the other.
